Welcome September! At this rate, Christmas will be here before you know it! We had another wonderful week of learning. I am very proud of how well the children are doing.
We started going to the library this week. With our full schedule, I am not sure how often the children will get to go. I am aiming for 2-3 times a week. I will keep you posted. Your child should be bringing home their library books and reading them to you. Take a few minutes and quiz them on the contents of the book.
This Tuesday, September 7th, is the first Buffalo P.R.I.D.E. meeting. It will take place from 6:00-7:00pm at the middle school. This an easy way to earn those informational PI hours. Start now, so you are not scrambling come May.
Our booth for Founder's Day, September 17th, has been approved. As I mentioned during open house, we will pair with Miss Hockett's class for the Ring-a-Juice Booth. Please look for a letter about our booth in your child's binder on Tuesday.
In reading, we will shift gears and focus on the comprehension skill of recognizing the main idea of a story. This week's story, Henry and Mudge, is a realistic fiction story.I am sure the kids are familiar with this wonderful duo. We will also be learning how to answer a question by restating the question in the form of a statement. In spelling, the words focus on long vowels that follow the cvce pattern. Your child can pratice each week's spelling words at Spellingcity.com. This is a great site where your child can play games with the words, plus they can even take a test!. When your child enters the site, they will click on "find a list ." Then they will search by teacher and type in my name (caputo). Click on Tracy Caputo and scroll down until they come to the correct list. The words are listed by the name of our weekly story. They worked on this site this week during their spelling center, so they should know how to navigate through it and locate the correct list. Recognizing the difference between a command and a exclamation sentence will be our focus in grammar. We will continue to work on recognizing an asking sentence.
An orally given test on chapter 1 will take place on Monday. This test will help your child get ready for the math procedures, which is an oral assessment, portion of the SAT 10. We will be doing an oral, as well as, a written assessment for every chapter. By the time SAT 10 rolls around the children will be old pros at this particular math format. Recognizing hundreds, tens, and ones, place value of a three digit number and different forms of a three digit number will comprise the math lessons for the week. We will be getting into practicing quick recognition of addition and subtraction facts. I will be sending home information on how your child can access our math program at home and gain extra practice on those skills that are giving them a little trouble, or they can challenge themselves. They will even be able to print off their homework if they should forget it at school. Please continue to check over your child's homework and mark those problems that they are having a difficult time understanding.
In Science we have started our look at the different animal classifications. This week we will explore the habitats of several different animals. The children will be getting their first project assignment on September 17th. They may have come home and mentioned this to you, since I have brought it up to them. This project will focus on an animal's habitat. No need to worry, they will have plenty of time to complete it, and an informational letter will come home with full details on our expectations.
Please remember to check your child's binder and agenda for important notes and papers. Read with your child on a nightly basis. It makes a tremendous impact on their learning!
I wish everyone a wonderful extended weekend and rest of the week!
